Are You Ready For Your New Car Delivery!?!

Your lender will "2nd Day Air" or "Overnight" your check to you.  (Do not have it sent directly to the dealership)

You need to now contact the Internet Sales Manager and arrange for a pick up.  Call them, email them...it makes no difference.  Set an exact time and let them know that you will be pressed for time.  (they're going to want one last chance to sell you some add-ons.)

When you arrive at the dealership make sure the new car is the exact same make, model, color, options, accessories etc as the one you ordered.  Some people even want to make sure it's the exact car they test drove...so they verify the VIN.  I personally don't feel this is necessary...after all, there was a time delay between the time you test drove the car and the time you put a deposit down on it.

Check and make sure everything is functioning properly, check the fit and finish.  Look for scratches, dings and any minor damage that could have happened on the Lot or during a test drive.

Go over the paper work and make sure that all the figures totals etc are exactly as stated on the purchase agreement.

Sign the papers...hand them the check...take delivery!

It's a good idea to sit down with the sales person and have them go over the features of the car with you...make sure you know how to properly use everything.

Usually they'll introduce you to the service manager.  after all, they want to do your warranty work... they make no money if you go to the dealership in the next town for warranty work, oil changes, tire rotation etc.

The service manager is a good person to know...they can be of real help to you should you happen to have problems down the road.  Always treat them with respect.

Now...if the sales person is any good at all, they will try and get you to adds some extras before they let you out of the dealership.  Just what are these extras?

  • Extended Service Contract - If you decided you need one you should already have one.

  • GAP Insurance - Might be a good idea (depends on your circumstances) but, if needed, you should already have it through your insurance company.

  • Tire and Wheel protection - forget it

  • Credit Life, accident and Health Insurance - get it elsewhere if you want it

Paint protection, fabric protection, undercoating, pin stripping, noise dampening etc.

Don't let them pressure you into any of this...in fact, don't even let them waste your time talking about it.  Just firmly inform them that you are on a tight schedule and that you need to get the paper work done so you can leave...be insistent.

That's it...you drive off with your new car.  You made a deal that you're happy with.  You did not get suckered into any high cost extras.  You eliminated hard belly to belly negotiation.  The dealership made a sale and will make money servicing your car.  It's a win, win situation.

There are a couple of things that were not covered in the previous steps...things like trade-ins, Leasing, rebates etc.

Step Number Ten will cover New Car Trade-ins.
