This Is A VERY Critical New Car Buying Step

This step will take a lot of "guts" on your part.  You'll be face to face with the salesperson...they'll do their best to take charge of you and drive you where they want you...YOU MUST BE STRONG AND PERSEVERE.

In your last email exchange with the Internet Sales Manager (Step Four) you set up a time and date to test drive the new cars you have a firm pricing on.

Make sure you take along anyone who will be involved, with you, in the final purchase decision (significant other etc) Make sure this person has read this entire website along with you.  Make sure you are both on the same page.  you do NOT want to get into any argument with this person.  If it looks like a fight or argument is about to break out...both of you must leave.  Make sure you have both agree on this before you ever leave home.

Some people like only one person to go...that way they can always say..."I have to go home and talk with my significant other."  This tactic works but I think it's best that both parties are involved in the test drive.

You now have arrived at the dealership and meet with the Sales person.  It's ok to be friendly and make small talk...after all the Salesperson is a fellow human.  You may even enjoy talking with them.

Just remember one thing...do not let them take charge of you.  You must remain in control.  If things seem to get out of control you can always just walk away.

Anyway...let's get back to the point of this step.

Test drive the exact vehicles you wish to purchase...do not take any substitutions. The new car you want to test drive should be there...after all, you made an appointment to test drive it.  Keep in mind, that it's possible that it's already sold or that someone may be late coming back from a test drive with it.  Do NOT let this shadow you thinking.  If it's sold and if they do not have another one on the Lot just like it...leave.  Tell them to email you when they have your exact new car and you can then set up another "test drive" appointment.

If someone is test driving it...do not stay in conversation with the salesperson.  Tell them you wish to walk around and browse until the car comes back.  If the salesperson tags along you must inform them that you'd like to browse alone.

If you're there to "test drive" more than one vehicle, test drive those that are available.

Remember...you do not want to test drive one that is similar to the one you want...you want to test drive the exact type you want...even down to the color and trim.

Now Test Drive the vehicle(s).  If you still like it, write down the new car's VIN number...it's on a metal tag on the dash in the lower left corner of the windshield.  You'll have to read it through the windshield.  It should also be on the window sticker but I always like to get it directly off the tag.

Now...

Once your through with the "test drive"  GO HOME

The Salesperson will try to get you into one of the little "closing" cubicles.  Do not fall for this.  do not fall for any "if you buy today..." tactics.  You do not have to even comment on the 'test drive".  Just write down the VIN number (if you're still interested in the vehicle) and go home.

Tell the Salesperson you'll contact them...THEN LEAVE.

Hmmm?  Have I made that point clear?

They will do their gol-darned best to get you into a closing room or into a discussion...RESIST AND GO HOME!
